Wildlife that can be seen in the Whitstable area

Brent Geese: A common sight along the South Swale during the winter months.

During the winter the Snow Bunting makes an appearance, from its spring and summer habitats in the arctic regions. A good place to see these is Long Rock at Swalecliffe. In some winters the Shorelark   (a rare winter visitor) also arrives and is well worth watching out for.

During the winter months large flocks of Brent Geese can be seen along the Swale. These have flown in from the arctic regions and will stay until the weather starts to improve, when they will return to their breeding grounds for the summer.

Many ducks can be also be seen in the area. Look out for Tufted Duck, Eider Duck, Teal, Wigeon and Gadwall among the many others.

There are many waders to be seen at this time of year. Look out for Knot, Grey Plover, Dunlin, Turnstone, Ringed Plover and Oystercatchers.

Turnstone: Seen along the shoreline looking for food.
